Your last chance for Merrie City fest 2013

Two halves of Hamelswordes' and Bier Huis' collaborative brew
Good morning. This is just a reminder to say today is your final chance for Wakefield Beer Festival 2013.
The doors at The Space, on Waldorf Way, open at 11am today (Saturday, November 9).
I had a very enjoyable couple of hours there on Thursday.


The highlight of the evening for me - a beer I'd been chasing for some time after missing it in Leeds and Sheffield - was Revolutions' and Five Towns' Super Creeps.
The pale beer was brewed at Revolutions's Castleford base, along with its sister brew Scary Monsters, a black IPA. Both were made from the same base recipe and at 4.5%, with black malt added in the latter.
I tried both and much preferred the lighter beer, but then I'm a bit of a black IPA sceptic so that's not a good steer.
I also sampled another collaborative effort in the form of a very unusual beer from Hamelsworde Brewery and Bier Huis shop owner David Jones, of Ossett.
It was called Phucket (4.5%) and was made with hops that Mr Jones grew in his garden.
The tasting notes reveal: "This green hopped ale is amber and bitter with a citrus aroma and lemony/aniseed flavour.
"Lemongrass, Makrut Lime leaves and Thai Basil and four separate additions of chilli are all added in the latter stages of the boil."
Despite having all that information, I still can't quite put my finger on the taste, which was bordering on herbal but in a nice way.

Anyway, it certainly went well with food, which I was beginning to need after a few jars. And on another food-related note, another local beer I sampled was Fernandes' Black Voodoo. Debate was raging whether its after-taste was was Terry's Chocolate Orange or Jaffa Cakes. I was in the former camp.
I drank predominantly local - apart from Irwell Works' Costa del Salford - and I would have liked to have tried more, but it was time to head for the train station.
But a fortuitous misreading of the timetable allowed a sneaky half of lovely Malt Shovel Mild at Fernandes Brewery Tap on Avison Yard, near Kirkgate subway.

A top end to a top night in Wakey. Thank you to festival organiser Mark Gibson et al for their brilliant hospitality. Get along today if you can.
